As the Army Reserve command grew in end strength and was reorganized in 1967, US Army Reserve Commands were established and the 452d General Hospital came under the command and control of the 86th US Army Reserve Command in Chicago IL. The 86th US Army Reserve Command’s shoulder patch is shown to the left, better know as the Blackhawks. The 30th Hospital Center at Fort Sheridan IL remained the units immediate higher headquarters.
In the fall of 1967 COL Weinshel, commander of the 452d General Hospital for 18 years, assumed command of the 30th Hospital Center at Ft. Sheridan, IL and earned his promotion to Brigadier General. COL Carroll A. Bauer former deputy commander, assumed command of the 452d General Hospital. During 1969 the unit attended annual training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. as a total unit. There it continued its combination of MOS parallel training working in the Army Hospital and performing field exercises.
1969 also saw the 452d again move from the US Army Disciplinary Barracks to the former Nike Site located at 4828 W. Silver Spring Drive. This location remains the home of unit today. At the same time St. Francis Hospital on Milwaukee’s far south side opened a unique on-the-job training program for the unit. St. Francis became the first private hospital in Wisconsin to provide actual medical-surgical training for the 452d’s corpsmen. This program was so successful that it was expanded to include the VA Hospital at Wood and Milwaukee County General Hospital.
1970 saw COL. Carroll Bauer retire and COL Julius Meyer assumed command. The unit began a series of annual training that were performed in increments rather then the entire unit. For the next several training periods, increment training was the norm for AT.
In 1973 COL Meyer passed away from cancer and COL Roger Lehman assumed command of the unit. The 452d continued it’s superior rating during AT periods at such locations as Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver CO., Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft Sam Houston TX., Letterman Army Medical Center, San Francisco, CA., Ft Leonard Wood, MO., Ft. Campbell, KY., and running the Troop Medical Clinic at Fort McCoy, WI.
